As a foreign student you can work in the Netherlands, however, various rules apply.
Part-time job
If you are interested in a part-time job as a foreign student, the same rules apply as for foreign employees. For European students, the free movement of workers means that they are allowed to work in the Netherlands. For non-European students, a note 'Work is freely permitted' or a work permit is required. This work permit can be applied for by your employer at the UWV. The procedure for this takes about 5 weeks.
There are some restrictions for non-European students:
- you can only do seasonal work in the months of June, July and August
- You work all year round, part-time but never more than 10 hours a week
These restrictions do not apply to residents of the European Union, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. They are allowed to work full-time, just like Dutch students.
Internship
In some situations a work permit (TWV) is required:
Training abroad? Then sometimes a work permit is required.
If the intern comes from abroad to do an internship, then in some cases the employer must apply for a work permit for the intern. Trainees with a passport from one of the EER-landen countries or from Switzerland are free to work in the Netherlands.
Trainees with a different nationality need a TWV or GVVA.
- Does the internship last less than three months? Then the employer applies for a work permit at the UWV.
- Will the internship take longer? Then the employer applies for a GVVA at the IND. GVVA stands for: combined residence and work permit
Training in the Netherlands? Then no work permit required.
Is the intern following a program in the Netherlands? And is the internship relevant to that training? Then the employer does not need to apply for a work permit for the intern. That student then already has a residence permit in connection with his study program. Concrete agreements must be made with the student and the relevant educational institution. These agreements are recorded in an internship agreement between employers, intern and the educational institution. The Inspectorate SZW can ask the employer about the agreement.
