An internship to never forget

Since there are very few companies in the Netherlands and Europe that are involved with seed multiplication, Lisa Hermans (23) from America (NL) went to New Zealand for four months. It would turn out to be an unforgettable internship!

Her third year internship brought Lisa Hermans (23) from America (NL) to the other side of the world. In a small town in the south of New Zealand she did four months of research at Ariki Seeds, a specialist in the multiplication of hybrid vegetable crops, something you don't see a lot of in the Netherlands.

"My goal at Ariki Seeds was to gain a clearer picture of the function of a seed multiplication company and to experience what the process of the multiplication of vegetable crops entails. I've experienced the process from start to finish: from planting the seedlings to harvesting and cleaning the seeds. It's a joy to contribute to such a beautiful and pure end product."

You see icy-blue lakes, waterfalls, fjords, glaciers, gigantic mountains and all sorts of indigenous plants and wildlife. The smells and colours of the nature are what stuck with me the most.

Hiking in nature

On weekends Lisa had time to go out and discover New Zealand. She took in the beautiful landscape and breathtaking nature. "You see icy-blue lakes, waterfalls, fjords, glaciers, gigantic mountains and all sorts of indigenous plants and wildlife. The smells and colours of the nature are what stuck with me the most. If you're not really into backpacking and long hikes, you can always go rafting, bungeejumping and skydiving."

An unforgettable journey

Going to the other side of the planet on her own has made Lisa stronger and more independent. "The internship and trip seemed very scary beforehand, but it's been more than worth it. These four months have motivated me even more to keep developing myself within the plant sector. I'm now 100% sure that I want to work in this field after my study. It was a journey to never forget."
